Released in , The Avalanches' debut album Since I Left You could be called the most successful plunderphonics record ever made. It took its creators, a group of students going by the name The Avalanches, from their Melbourne, Australia houses to international musical stardom.
Standout tracks include album opener and title track Since I Left You, a soundscape of a perfect beach party, and the utterly unique, John Waters-sampling Frontier Psychiatrist. They started recording in and had used the working title of Pablo's Cruise. The duo primarily worked with a Yamaha Promix 01 and Akai S samplers. Band's members, Darren Seltmann and Robbie Chater, spent hours sampling music from vinyl records to create the songs on the album: Chater estimates that there are over 3, samples.
After sampling and arranging, the pair would swap their tapes, listen to each other's ideas and expand on whatever they had heard. The most prominent sample in the song is a vocal rip of Everyday by The Main Attraction.
