That said, there is one of them named Wicked K who leaves an impression. Wearing a top hat and speaking with a British accent, he's an optional mini-boss who fully intends to kick your ass but is at least polite about it. Jolly good stuff. In fact, there are more then a few jerks in their ranks. Not that you can blame them. If your body was a mess of melted, radioactive flesh you'd probably be in a sour mood too. We count them amongst the zombie ranks because in their feral form, they pretty well fit the bill.
Mindless and aggressive, you'd be hard-pressed to point out the difference when a horde of Ghouls is charging you down. If the player desired, they could have another character intercept Death and plead for the life of the deceased. Death in turn would play them in a game of rock-paper-scissors to decide the fate of the dead.
If the player lost and Death happened to be in a good mood, though, he'd return them as a zombie. That might sound like a lousy deal, but really, being a zombie in The Sims wasn't bad. Aside from nasty looking green skin, a zombified character could do everything a normal Sim could do. And we mean everything. Rebuild plays like a small scale turn-based strategy game. Getting through each day is a constant balancing act as you try to expand on your stronghold, gather enough food for your growing population and defend yourself from zombies.
The zombies are less the scary ghouls of other games and more of a force of nature to be managed and prepared for. Massive hordes will often come passing by, drawn to your stronghold by your activities, and if you're not ready for them all your progress can be swept away in a storm of gnashing bloody teeth.
Once again our superior intellect triumphs against the odds! Michael Jackson: The Experience was largely considered a disappointment by critics but it at least had the courtesy to include Thriller in its song library unlike Moonwalker. And where there is Thriller there are zombies! While the player dances along with the music, zombies dance along with them just like in the music video! Except lamer and not nearly as much fun.
Such is the tried and true concept behind many a defense game. The Last Stand and its sequels separate themselves from the herd by being really, really good. Their main draw is simply striking that fine balance between challenge and entertainment. The Last Stand can be a tough game at times, but it never becomes so hard as to infuriate you. Rather, it drives you forward, latching on to that portion of your psyche that whispers "Just one more level" into the ear of your subconscious.
You gather resources, build tools and use your imagination to construct whatever your mind can imagine. That is, if the zombies don't get you first. While the day time glows with cheeriness and possibility, night in Minecraft is a realm of monsters.
Ironically, the low-res zombies of Minecraft are in many ways more threatening than those featured in many hi-res modern games. In the early stages of the game when your tools are basic and your buildings ill-equipped to deal with the onset of monsters out to kill you, your best option is often just dig a hole and hide until morning.
Its story spans thousands of years, involves dozens of characters and employs one of the most clever game mechanics ever devised: sanity. Sanity works as one might expect it to in the real world.
Seeing and experiencing scary stuff harms your psyche. The lower your sanity falls, the freakier things become. Much of this translated into in-game scares. The architecture of levels would change or you'd be attacked by enemies that weren't really there. Even scarier were the moments that broke the fourth wall, manipulating the player's sense of security outside of the game in ways that no game since has ever done. You've got the rotting flesh bit, the moaning, and a propensity toward eating people.
Outside of those sparkling qualities there also tends to be an expectation that the undead can take a lot of punishment. Most zombies adhere to that timeless mantra of "shoot them in the head," but beyond that design flaw they can soak up damage like a Brawny Man paper towel. Not the zombies of Final Fantasy, though. All you need to do to take out the undead in this franchise is sprinkle a bit of Phoenix Down. Even back in the original Final Fantasy, a game known for ts intense difficulty, wiping out an entire horde of the undead was a simple process of casting Harm or Fire.
LeChuck, the titular villain and returning antagonist of Monkey Island 2, met a definitive end in the first game. He returns in the second game by way of voodoo and he's--you guessed it--a zombie. Pirate zombies? Someone should make a make a movie about this.
While more than a few ghouls adhere to the up close and personal approach to violence, others attack by throwing knives, axes and an assortment of sharp and pointy objects. Does someone want to explain how they can throw a hatchet with pinpoint accuracy but can't fire a gun? Resident Evil was originally meant to be a remake of Sweet Home and many of the more classic elements of that game —the mansion, the door loading screens, the inventory management- came straight from Sweet Home. Following five people locked inside a haunted mansion, the core of the game was fighting monsters including some zombies! Each character had their own special role in the group and if one of them was killed in battle they'd stay dead, making the rest of the game more difficult.
Due to its sometimes explicit horror imagery, Sweet Home never left Japan. While Resident Evil might be the more famous 3D game about fighting monsters in a mansion, Alone in the Dark rode that wagon first, did it well and even included zombies for good measure. What better place to unleash a zombie apocalypse? In Stubbs the Zombie in "Rebel without a Pulse" you play the titular Stubbs, a corpse who rises from the dead one day and decides to tear Punchbowl down.
Stubbs runs from point A to point B eating and killing every living person he encounters, all the while building up a horde of zombies for the player to command. What raises the game to greater heights is its sense of humor. While there is a healthy foundation of crudeness running throughout there are also moments of genuine social commentary that move it beyond the realm of the fart joke.
That said it's great to find one that executes the idea as well as Dead Nation. The sheer volume of zombies it puts on the screen is often overwhelming just to look at, let alone fight.
You'll literally find yourself standing your ground against hundreds of zombies, hands sweating and adrenaline pumping as you try desperately to make it to the next checkpoint. Couple this with quality co-op and some neat and practical environmental effects you'd never think a car alarm would be so useful and you have a zombie game and a PS3 exclusive that is undeniably worth the price of admission.
Though the game's violence was actually pretty mild even by 's standard, it was still forced to go through several modifications before it could be released in certain countries and on certain platforms. Nintendo for instance, required all the blood to be removed or turned to purple goo while in several European countries the name was changed to a less explicit 'Zombies'.
For all that was changed, several things remained intact. The game was still a quality, fun send up of classic horror. Besides being an exercise in virtual masochism it was also a tribute to the great horror movies of old. Frankenstein, the Mummy, and of course Dracula all make an appearance as well as the zombie as, you guessed it, an early-level low-threat menace.
