Click and drag diagonally across the canvas. This will draw your shape. Anchor the shape. You can do this by placing your mouse cursor over one of the corners of the text box and then dragging diagonally away from the text box's center. Enter your text. In the text box, type in the text that you want to display. Give your text a background if you like.
If you don't want your text to sit on whatever background items are on your canvas, click Opaque in the "Background" section of the toolbar.
